Inara is by far my favorite female protagonist of Firefly, if only because there is so much mystery surrounding her and the show was cancelled before we ever got to see any of her backstory.
Inara is a character that wears many faces, further adding to her mystery and making her relationships with the other characters extremely complicated. (I’m looking at YOU, Mal.) On the surface, she is the ideal woman; beautiful, intelligent, graceful and a witty conversationalist, which makes her quite a popular Companion. However, the writers are clever enough to slip us subtle hints that there’s more beneath that carefully constructed facade. What is she doing running around with petty thieves? Is it because she really wants to see the universe, or for other, more personal reasons? Why can’t she just tell Mal how she feels about him? She’s obviously running from something, although it’s clear she’s lying to herself about it. I guess these are questions that only fanfiction can now attempt to solve. :P
I don’t know if this can really be considered a spoiler or not, so maybe don’t read on if you don’t want anything outside of the show revealed and would prefer to stick with fanfiction, but…
Inara was dying of an unknown terminal illness. We’ve actually been given an explanation for some of the mystery surrounding her. Although, I still agree that it doesn’t explain everything and being given a brief explanation like that will never be the same as if we got to see the storyline play out on screen :(
But I really like reading your thoughts on her character! She’s my favorite and she needs more appreciation! :)
